Feeling like an outsider in society

There's a goth mutual on social media who's talking about identifying as an outcast. Given that the vast majority of participants in this sub aren't neurotypical (thread: Neurodivergence in the goth subculture), she's not the only one. My questions to you:

1) Do you see yourself as an outsider?

2) How old are you (roughly)?

3) Has the goth subculture become a home for you? In what ways?

4) Bonus question: Are there any specific goth bands/artists who were there for you during rough times?

I could write a book on this topic. I don't want to dominate the discussion, so I'll quickly give you a brief answer:

1) Yes.

2) Mid-30s. (Still an outsider.)

3) Oh god, where to start. I appreciate the acceptance of weirdness not just among goths, but also in the music we adore. (Andi Sexgang and Ausgang recently followed me back on Twitter!) And the snark. "There are no rotating ankhs in this webpage divider."

4) Nick Cave's music carried through every major life transition, including major depression and school stress. Of all the concerts I've attended, his are always by far the most riveting. It's a nigh-spiritual experience.

How about you? Feel free to keep it short if you like.

I feel like I’m not goth enough

Hi. I feel like I'm not goth enough to be considered goth. I'm really low maintenance because I have chronic exhaustion. I wear all black all the time I love the culture and I love the music, it's what I grew up on.

I just feel like I don't look goth, I know there's different sub cultures but I don't think my appearance fits any of them. I have dark hair and I have a lot of facial piercings but when it comes to makeup and how I dress I don't feel goth enough. I can't really afford nice gothic clothes and tbh I don't even like my body because I just feel like in order to be considered goth I need to be thin, which I'm not. I don't think that about others, just myself.

When it comes to makeup and accessories I just never have the energy to do it anymore, when I do I love it but it's very rare that I'm able to.

Have other people experienced this? Is there a subculture of low maintenance goths?

Any more songs like Bauhaus Of Lilies and Remains?

Hello!! I’m new to goth music and have been going down lists and lists of the most recommended classic songs and bands. Of Lilies and Remains is one of the songs that truly clicked for me. The bassline, the innovative melody, the lyrics, the weird instruments… it sounds so fresh and unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. I can’t even describe how I’m supposed to feel when listening to the song, it’s not sad and moody, nor overly funky and upbeat, it just has this very specific vibe that carries this calm, manic energy.

It feels so strange to ask how do I go about looking for music in the same genre, considering it’s clearly under the goth umbrella. I just have yet to encounter any other songs like that! Any recommendations will be highly appreciated

Can goth have anti-establishment themes like punk does?

I know goth is already anti-establishment but I'd like to hear more social justice in music.

Deathrock bands like Rudimentary Peni?

Anarcho punk/deathrock band Rudimentary Peni has lots of distortion filled like dark emotional lyrics. I’m looking for bands that have a similar sound or lyrical content to that of Peni’s later work like “echoes of anguish” and “no more pain”

How do you differentiate between standard post-punk and gothic rock? (Like the dark post punk gothic rock)

I can definitely differentiate in many cases but I’m curious to how to properly differentiate it music wise because a lot of gothic rock sounds like standard post-punk and whenever I hear a post punk song I wonder if it’s gothic rock, ik lyrical themes play a big role and all but I wanna know how to properly tell the difference, I’m still learning about the subculture so I’m open to learning.

I just discovered the band “Inkubus Sukkubus”. Any recommendations for other bands like them?

The title says it all, but to be more specific, I'm looking for more music with more mysticism in their lyrics and a sound that's a lot fuller.

Maybe I don’t look like a stereotypical goth, but I’m into the 80s goth rock.

Can I be mallgoth and still like goth music

I know that mallgoths lean more twords the genre of nu metal but ice recently saw my self loving goth music and Type 0 negitive. I'm even thinking about maybe being a vampire goth because I love vampires and stuff. But knowing the relationship of how goths did not like mallgoths I don't know if I should like it or not and just stick to nu metal instead. What should I do?
